"Broken" transit instrument, made by Stackpole and Brother of New York. Transferred from the U.S. Naval Observatory.
This is one of eight identical instruments that the Stackpole firm built for the United States' observations of the 1874 Transit of Venus.The original cost of each instrument was $1360. This instrument was used to observe the 1874 transit at Campbell Town, Tasmania and the 1882 transit at Santiago, Chile. This instrument is identical to catalog #327,719, also in the Smithsonian collections.
