Lantern slide, moveable. No maker's name. Gift of Colgate University, Department of Physics and Astronomy.
This slide is wood, with a glass "Sun" inset. A sliding glass plate (missing) with painted silhouetts of the Moon and Venus was used to reproduce solar eclipses and the transit of Venus. In the 1848 catalog of American instrument dealer Benjamin Pike, a set of eleven astronomical slides, including this one, was offered for $20.
