It is almost certainly the only remaining example of the micrometers designed by Giovanni Giacomo Marinoni from Udine (1676-1755). Marinoni sent to Eustachio Manfredi (1674-1739), first Director of the Bologna Observatory, a gift of his position micrometer invention, with metal box and eye-piece lenses, that he had purposely made by J. Scherer in 1732, as can be seen from the inscription on the sides of the instrument where we find the screws, both on the movable and fixed parts. This instrument was used by Bologna astronomers in the Venus transit observations in 1761.
