The Grubb refractor was financed by EM Reed so the telescope has long been referred to as "The Reed Telescope." The telescope was used for photographing the sun during the 1882 transit of Venus. The Grubb refractor was installed in the east dome of the newly built Winchester Observatory at Yale. Though the Winchester Observatory was demolished during the 1960s, the refractor continued to be used by the Department of Astronomy and is now permanently installed in the Leitner Family Observatory which is only a short distance from where the Winchester used to be. The Grubb refractor continues to be used today for undergraduate teaching and public observing nights.
